Emerging Health Professionals Program

Emerging Health ProfessionalsThe partnership of Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, and Penn State Lehigh Valley is pleased to offer this pioneering dual-enrollment program which combines interactive, university level classroom learning and observation in a health care setting. The program is designed for high school seniors interested in the health care field and will allow students the opportunity to explore careers in health care first-hand. In addition, the program is designed to prepare students for post-secondary education by offering college-level science courses.

The Emerging Health Professionals Program is a half-day program (8 to 11a.m. or 12 to 3p.m.) that runs the duration of the school year. Students spend Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Penn State faculty and the LCTI instructor at Penn State Lehigh Valley. Students spend Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at LVHHN participating in a health curriculum taught by the LCTI instructor. Participants in the Emerging Health Professionals Program will be offered a total of eight Penn State credits: Chemistry 110 Chemical Principles & Chemistry 111 Experimental Chemistry in the fall semester, and Biology 141 Physiology & Biology 142 Physiology Lab in the spring semester. In addition, they will be able to earn high school credit for the honors LCTI health component of the program. LCTI classes meeting at LVHHN will reinforce concepts taught at Penn State Lehigh Valley. This integrated model provides a strong framework for drawing connections between classroom learning and contextual, real-world application, and also for exposing students to the variety of careers in health care. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to learn from and observe health care professionals in a variety of settings with the LVHHN organization. Penn State Lehigh Valley courses will be taught by PhD and Master's level science faculty, in cooperation with LVHHN staff. The LCTI instructor is an RN, BSN, MEd.
